One goal at GoForth is to have enough money by 2010 to purchase a fullblood registered boer buck that meets some strict criteria for our herd, but until then, we will use the bucks that belong to our parents, unless, of course, we find someone who does A.I.

Charger

Our boer goat buck, Charger
Meet our junior herd sire!  He belongs to my parents, and should be around 7/8 boer.  They didn't inquire about his exact percentage, so we don't know for sure.  Charger was born a single, at 10 - 10 1/2 pounds, but last year his dam had triplets that she fed all by herself.  We successfully grafted him onto Rosemary (what a surprise!), who produces a lot of milk, and he is huge for his age!  Charger weighed 23 1/2 pounds at one month, 34 pounds at two months, and a whopping 49 pounds at three months!  Charger is the biggest kid on the farm!  He has a very solid frame and is W I D E with a nice bone density.  That should definitely put some size on kids who's mothers have bird legs.  Way to go, Charger!  Keep it up!

An interesting note is that Charger has a spot on his neck that is darker than the rest of his head.  It's not quite black, but it's definitely different.  Perhaps he carries the spotted gene.

Buckly

Our Nubian dairy goat buck

Buckly is very sweet, and very tall.  He was born on Mother's Day this year, but he should be old enough to breed does by the time we need him.  I can't say much about him yet since we just got him, but I can say that his dam gives over a gallon of milk a day and the kid looks great!

Rigel

Rigel, our Nubian, Alpine goat buck

Rigel is a pretty good buck. He is 3/4 nubian and 1/4 alpine. His sire is Campbell - 1/2 alpine, 1/2 nubian - and his mother is Rosemary, who is an excellent milker. She is 100% nubian as far as we know, though not registered.  We have several of his half sisters as well and some of his daughters.  All of them are milking very well, so we definitely know he's got the genes!

Rigel has now passed his second birthday and he's a chunk.  He's also way to friendly to be in the same pen with when he is in rut unless you don't mind the smell.  I really don't mind it that much myself if it stays on the buck, but that's the problem.  It doesn't, and it's not terribly easy to wash off.
